胡國琳 (Hu Guolin):
With the support of a scholarship from the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Hu Guolin completed a master's degree in just a year and a half, a task that normally takes two years to accomplish. Despite receiving recognition and encouragement from the department head for his abilities, and being encouraged to pursue a Ph.D., he realized six months later that the path of a Ph.D. wasn't suitable for him and resolved to give it up.
However, in the late 1980s, finding a job in the United States as a foreigner with a master's degree wasn't easy, especially with the limited number of employers able to provide H1 work visas. At that time, Hu Guolin was prepared to return to Taiwan to seek employment when he unexpectedly learned that the renowned Wall Street investment bank Solomon Brothers was hiring.
Consequently, he decided to write the only resume he would ever write in his lifetime for an application to Solomon Brothers. Fortunately, Solomon Brothers was impressed by his IT background. He successfully joined Solomon Brothers on Wall Street, a company that was a major force in the region and had once been the most profitable fixed-income investment bank globally. Hu Guolin joined the firm's proprietary trading division, a team of 25 that contributed 50% of the company's profits. His responsibilities included building various trading models and experiencing shifts in the financial markets. His outstanding performance was highly valued by various supervisors.
